Fernando Vacas composes sound maps for International Flower Festival

The Spanish musician and composer Fernando Vacas created different sound maps for some of the installations of FLORA 2019, the International Flower Festival in Cordoba.

The "auditory maps" interpreted through sound and music the proposals of the artists participating in FLORA. These sound settings were specifically created by Vacas for three of the floral installations: Flor Motion (Spain), Lisa Waud (United States) and PHKA (Thailand).

FLORA makes Cordoba the epicenter of the world of flowers

The International Flower Festival opened its doors and Cordoba once again yielded itself to the charm of flowers and the city turned into "a fragrance". Between the 18th and 27th of October 2019, more than 200.000 people visited the different floral installations.

The third edition as well brought new activities such as the one that took place on the day of the disassembly of the five creations. A “Floral Guerrilla” that consists of anonymously distributing bouquets made with the surplus flower material of the creations in Cordoba so that, whoever finds them, can take them home.

One of the participants of this 2019 FLORA, the Flor Motion collective, which is formed by 15 of the best florists of Spain's capital, already implements this guerilla initiavtive once a month in Madrid.

Lisa Waud, from the United States, participated with a conceptual creation in the courtyard of the Archaeological Museum, for which she had been inspired by the museum's collection and the popular courtyards that open in May 2020.

For its part, PHKA, from Thailand, install their work in the courtyard of the Viana Palace. For the organization it was important that this country, with such a rich floral culture, was present in FLORA.

Australian Mary Lennox, an artist who comes from the world of fashion and uses not very common flowers and plants, exhibited in the Orive Palace.

The fifth artist came from France, Thierry Boutemy, the "father" of many who come to FLORA every year and whose works express the wild nature of his homeland, Normandy. His ephemeral work could be seen in the courtyard of the Provincial Council.

Flor Motion, with the soundtrack of Fernando Vacas, took the title of FLORA 2019 for the best floral installation.

Fernando Vacas shares the vision about his sound maps

A journey is one of the most real encounters that human beings can experience.

In the musical interventions of FLORA 2019, the "journey" changes from one installation to another.

In Casa Góngora, where "Trepidante" reveals its story, the journey is a walk through a Cordovan courtyard where people live and share feelings and moments.

In the Archaeological Museum, the journey is based on the sounds of nature that Lisa Waud brings us, turning them into a soundtrack worthy of a floral museum of the XXIII century.

In the Viana Palace, the journey involves a slow dive into Thai landscapes and floral sensibility, created by the PHKA collective. Here, the musical expression has more to do with poetry than with music.

In all of them, art, flowers and sharing something are the main characters.
